The Punjab Emergency Service (Rescue 1122) expanded to 12 new districts of
Punjab during, 2009 which include Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Muzafargarh, Rajanpur, Mianwali, Pakpattan, Kasur, Gujrat, Bahawalnagar, Jehlum, Attock and Khanewal. Director General, Punjab Emergency Service (Rescue 1122), Dr. Rizwan Naseer reviewed the data of emergencies and rescue operations for the year 2009, which shows that the Service has rescued 203400 emergency victims in 2009 as compared to 151567 in 2008. Data reveals that the Service has conducted 195604 rescue operations in 2009 till 29th December in comparison with 143557 rescue operations during 2008 in all major cities of the
Punjab . Regardless of increase in number of emergencies the Service has maintained its average record response time of less than 7 minutes and provided citizens with a sense of safety. The Service is being expanded to other provinces during, 2009 and a Rescue1122 team has been dispatched to
Peshawar on special instructions of the Chief Minister Punjab, Mian Shahbaz Sharif. These rescuers have volunteered their services for their brothers in NWFP. The total number of emergency victims rescued by Rescue 1122 includes 59119 emergency victims in Lahore, 25947 in Faisalabad, 9819 in Rawalpindi, 12453 in Bahawalpur, 25896 in Multan, 11389 in D.G Khan, 9305 in Rahim Yar Khan, 8930 in Sahiwal, 19099 in Gujranwala, 10214 in Sialkot, 2893 in Murree and 8336 in Sargodha. The emergency calls to which Rescue 1122 responded during 2009 include 40.03% Road Traffic Accident, 54.93% Medical & Other emergencies, 3.1% Fire incidents, 0.18% Building collapse incidents and 0.05% Explosions. 2009 was marked by several terrorist attacks in different cities of Punjab which also included blasts, suicidal blasts and ambush activities such as attack on Sri Lankan team in Lahore, Police15 building attack, Moon Market attacks and the attacks on mosque at parade line in
Rawalpindi . All these attacks were sophisticatedly improvised and keeping in view the changing patterns of such terrorist attacks the Service has also planned proactively and changed the strategy accordingly, which ensured swift response and smooth management of these emergencies and resulted in saving many precious lives. Although there are several incidents where professional working of the Service restricted the emergencies turning into disasters this was observed during several bomb blast incidents like at Police15 building
Lahore the Service responded within 2 minutes of the blast and over 23 vehicles were at the site of blast within half hour. The whole incident was managed smoothly after a day long rescue operation. 12 trapped police officials were rescued alive from the debris of Police15 building by the Disaster Emergency Response Teams of Rescue1122. Dr. Rizwan Naseer said that Rescuers will maintain the same standards of the Service in new districts &
Peshawar and gain respect and blessings of the public by maintaining a courteous professional approach. Although an international standard Emergency Service is available for rescue of emergency victims but the current emergency situation in the country necessitates the need to work together for prevention of emergencies to build a safer .
